The works in The Boundless Inner Sky emerged during a period of personal reflection, having recently read Rilke’s Sonnets to Orpheus. The myth of Orpheus includes a story of his descent to the underworld, searching this realm of the afterlife for his beloved wife Eurydice. Orpheus fails the conditions under which she may return when he glances behind his cherished partner only an instant too soon. Eurydice falls back to oblivion. Rilke imagines this moment of shattering non-being in his poetry.
These images were made of desiring glances, curious and looking towards the dangerous and forbidden, blinding sun. Shattering sight yet moving forward through after worlds of phantom patterns and corneal flash burns. They are ethereal apparitions of light and life, seen through furtive glimpses.
